We are proud to share with you our 5th and last newsletter prior to the AGM. As you know, we have tried our best to take care of the health of Lake Bernard and to build community during a year which had some hurdles – the global pandemic has tested all of us in many ways. We hope you felt a connection to us, to the lake and to your community through these newsletters and our educational webinars.
We are looking forward to seeing you at the AGM this coming Saturday. As always, please do not hesitate reaching out should you have any questions or concerns. On behalf of the Board, it’s been a pleasure serving you this year. Thanks very much for trusting us to lead our Association. It’s been an honour and a lot of fun!

BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Further to your membership, please consider being part of the LBPOA Board. The LBPOA needs a board to ensure that lake health initiatives continue. The LBPOA Board has been able to encourage membership growth and retention, and foster a sense of community around the lake through newsletters, educational seminars and social events, among other things. The role of Director is a short term commitment that can have positive, long lasting impacts. It can be rewarding not only in the work you do for the lake but in the friendships formed with fellow Directors and of course, the members.
This year we are looking for 4 people to join the Board.
It would be extremely helpful if anyone with an interest notifies Deb Booth (Deb@lakebernard.ca) by 5:00pm this Friday so that we can present this at the meeting to facilitate this order of business. People are still welcome to nominate themselves or others during the meeting, however, given the format of our meeting is via zoom it would be helpful to know ahead of time..
Thank you to the 71 members who have paid their membership dues for the year. For those of you who have not yet paid, memberships can be renewed using the registration form on our website at https://lakebernard.ca/
LAKE HEALTH UPDATE
The LBPOA has completed the 2021 Lake Partnership Program (LPP) lake water quality sampling, with samples shipped to the Dorset Lab for analysis. Plans are in place to conduct water sampling for Total Phosphorus (TP) and flow as part of the TP budget for the lake. This is related to the upcoming Septic System survey that you will be receiving. The LBPOA will be getting involved in a wider range of sampling on the lake. Details will be provided at the AGM.

ROUNDTABLE UPDATE – SEPTIC SURVEY IS COMING!
The LBPOA has been diligently working with the Village of Sundridge, the Township of Strong, the Near North Enviro-Education Centre, the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority and the Almaguin Chamber of Commerce on lake health issues. The health of Lake Bernard affects us all and in turn, we all have a responsibility towards it. As you know, the first initiative is healthy septics. We’ve hosted 2 educational webinars.
The next step is a survey. Please keep a lookout for the survey which will be arriving in your mailbox. Thanks to the Village and the Township for mailing these out to all property owners since all addresses are held confidentially. Please return your survey to the NNEEC via email or mail by August 30th. Also in the mailout, please look for the one page flyer on healthy septics we hope you’ll enjoy!
The Phragmites Working Group Lake Bernard cuts invasive phragmites australis out of the lake and around the lake shore of Lake Bernard and needs skilled saw people to run our saws. The work is tedious /you get wet – but usually the summer days are pleasant. We cut if it rains but not in electrical storms of any kind. Usually we work in small groups of 8 – 10 on each site. We can pay for your time and provide the saws. Please contact: Marilee.email@example.com.
TOWN & TOWNSHIP HAPPENINGS
There are some basic infrastructure projects going on around town. Here are some of the projects the Village has been working on:
Mill Street fully resurfaced,
Greenwood Dr drainage and storm water flow fixes,
Queen St drainage and storm water flow fixes,
A new town half-ton truck, suitable to assist with winter road maintenance,
Municipal Office front door wheelchair access fix,
Office expansion and improvements for access and efficiencies,
Money is set aside, and tenders received for the new Edgar St park and playground.
EXCITING NEWS! The Provincial government has granted the combined municipalities of Sundridge, Strong and Joly $200,000 to get third party recommendations for improving our joint service delivery. This will include the Fire Department, Library, Arena, Medical Centre and Recreation Committee.
LBPOA members are welcome to give ideas on what they think could be done to upgrade any of these shared services. Please note Sundridge LBPOA members and Township LBPOA members can forward their suggestions to their respective administration.
The Village has also asked to get some input on the Children’s Park art structure.
Please note that both Mayor Hall and Mayor Elik, mayors of Sundridge and Strong respectively, will be attending our AGM this Saturday. They will be giving an update and will be available for questions.
And, the Town Hall meeting for the Village of Sundridge is coming up on Wednesday, July 21st at 6:00pm. To find the zoom link, please click here https://calendar.sundridge.ca/
The LBPOA is fundraising with Mabel’s Labels! If you’re not familiar with Mabel’s Labels, they are personalized, durable, waterproof labels. They are great for everything from paddles, life jackets, kayaks, towels, to water skis…even your new Lake Bernard clothing! Mabel’s Labels also offers clothing stamps, silicone bands for water bottles and face masks for both adults and children. You can customize them with your name and a design, and they are dishwasher, laundry and microwave safe. This is a great way to ensure your items don’t end up lost or mixed up AND to support the LBPOA. Please visit campaigns.mabelslabels.com and select Lake Bernard Property Owners’ Association (LBPOA) (Almaguin Highlands). Labels will ship for free directly to your home or cottage!
